REDING LAYS OUT AGENDA FOR RE-DRAFT OF EU DATA PROTECTION DIRECTIVES
On the 28th of January, Viviane Reding, Vice President of the European Commission, addressed the European Parliament in Brussels regarding the growing challenges to privacy.
In her comments Commissioner Reding specifically referenced that the EC is currently analysing over 160 responses to the public consultation on reform of the General Data Protection Directive. In speaking on the nature of the comments, Reding said, “I can tell you that most responses call for stronger and more consistent data protection legislation across the Union.”
When describing the issues that she intends to address in the pending rewrite of the 1995 Data Protection Directive, she lists the following points:
- Clarification of the application of key rules and principles in practice
- Ensuring that personal data are protected regardless of the location of the data controller
- Promoting the use of Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs)
- Stronger enforcement
NAID-Europe has already contacted Ms. Reding’s office with the intent of sharing its perspective on the importance of enforcement and clear direction in creating an effective regulation, as well as the importance of proper data destruction in ensuring privacy.
