EU COMMISSIONER CLAIMS ELECTRONIC RECYCLING LAWS NEGLECT DATA DESTRUCTION
In at least two separate publications over the last month EU Data Protection Supervisor Peter Hustinx expressed strong concerns that the WEEE Directives that govern the disposal of electronic waste have no data protection requirements.
In 2007, NAID-Canada conducted a pointed campaign to raise the same issue with regard to the similar legislation in the province of Ontario. This resulted in language being added to address the need for secure information destruction being included in the e-recycling process.
With the Data Protection Directive soon to be revised, and given that Mr. Hustinx is held in such high regard as a privacy official, it is very likely that the importance of electronic information destruction will be given a priority in future WEEE Directives.
