FRENCH LAW STRESS IMPORTANCE OF DATA PROTECTION
 
Recently introduced French legislation reinforcing the obligations of data processors and increasing the powers of the Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL) demonstrates that the issue is gaining attention both in that country and across continental Europe.  The bill includes doubling the potential fines for infringement of the data protection directive.
According to the report linked below, the proposed law won strong majority support in the Senate, but does not have the French government's backing and is not likely to be passed without changes.
