NAID : News : ACORN Claims Theft of Trashed Documents in California

November 24, 2009- The feud between Republican activists and embattled nonprofit ACORN has now grown to include the theft of over 200,000 documents, which contained sensitive data, including Social Security numbers and credit reports. While the documents were contained in a secured area for trash, ACORN admits that there was no attempt to shred them. ACORN California Head Organizer Amy Schur said “We want to get our property back so that we can properly secure it.” However, the activist who took the documents, recent California Assembly candidate Derrick Roach said, “They're not going to get the documents back” He contends that he is shielded by a 1988 Supreme Court ruling that there is no privacy expectation for garbage. The local District Attorney is reviewing the matter.
